Interesting thought of the day:
I'm convinced it's because of where I was born and raised, but I've only ever heard people say that they're going "back East" and "out West". I've never heard it transposed to going "out East" and "back West". Again, it's just because I'm an East Coast gal myself that I've only ever heard it the former way, but I was wondering if anyone had ever heard it said the latter way.
That's all. Happy Monday!

Around the end of high school, a bunch of us (several dozen) went on a trip back East. It was consistently known as "the Back East Trip".
I support the hypothesis that "back east" and "out west" are out west, as well as back east.

Maybe because this country started on the east coast? So because the east was the beginning, when people would venture out they would go west to do so?

Ditto Bonny.
I was raised in Denver, and we used the same familiar terms as you. However, my parents were from Boston, so that might have influenced things, too. But I still think along the same lines as what Bonny said. Remnants of a much younger America when the East were states and the West were territories or the Wild West.
I support the hypothesis that "back east" and "out west" are out west, as well as back east.
